SAP and RFID

Enterprise software developer, SAP is also an industry leader in the field of RFID solutions development. It already has 200 customers across 16 countries using its RFIS solution. It has now increased its RFID software offerings. The world leader in manufacturing ERP solutions recently announced, at the Hannover CeBit Trade Fair, commercial release of 2 new RFID software aimed primarily at pharmaceutical industry. The industry stands to gain immensely as the new software will help it secure drug distribution and fight drug counterfeiting practices. The drug counterfeit problem will hurt the industry by a whopping $75 billion by the end of this decade.

Integrating information from trading partners with enterprise information

The SAP object event repository database will hold the data captured from the RFID tags read by the readers. This data will then be used in relation to the already captured enterprise data. The important point to note is that the object event repository will also hold data gathered from organization’s trading partners. Let’s understand this with an example.

Use in Pharma industry

Prescription drugs are identified by a unique EPC (Electronic Product Code). When a batch of drug is manufactured, it is assigned an EPC which in turn is stored in the RFID tag attached to it. The tag is read at every point till it reaches the retail pharmacy store. Intermediaries such as distributors too read the tag and exchange this read data with manufacturers. Thus, this ensures that only the manufactured original drug is getting actually sold to the end user. This reduces the scope of replacing the original drug with counterfeit drug. Manufacturers can reconcile the data received from trading partners and the original RFID tag data to find any original shipment replaced by a duplicate shipment. Novartis is one of the many pharmaceutical companies using SAP RFID solution. The smooth integration of the object event repository with SAP ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) solution is an added advantage.

Defense and Automobile industry are other potential users of this technology. However, they would use different identification techniques. For example, as EPC is for pharma industry, UID (Unique Identification) is used for Defense industry.

With ongoing research in this field and reducing cost, counterfeit drugs will soon become a thing of past.
